Nick Powell’s quick-fire hat-trick hands Wigan a lifeline

Nick Powell scored a hat-trick in 11 minutes to overturn a two goal deficit and grab a vital three points for Wigan Athletic over Barnsley.

The Latics went a goal gown moment before the break when Adam Armstrong headed past Jakob Haugaard prior to Ryan Kent producing a super strike to put Barnsley 2-0 up on the hour mark.

That prompted interim manager Graham Barrow to substitute Powell onto the pitch 7 minutes later.

4 minutes later the former Crewe striker had struck a free-kick home before tapping home a parried shot less than 60 seconds later.

His hat-trick was completed when the slotted home a penalty 8 minutes from time.

The hosts managed to hold on to grab a vital three points.

They are now 4 points from safety with 21st placed Bristol City hosting QPR on Good Friday.

Wigan will be hoping Bristol City do not win and Blackburn, who are level on points with a game in hand, lose. Blackburn travel to Nottingham Forest, also on Good Friday.

Debate Points

Is it too little too late for Wigan?

How crucial was this game for the Latics?

Is Nick Powell under-rated?
